Good choices on the songs! I was afraid there would be a bunch I didn't know or had barely heard of, but such was not the case. I played eight out of the ten in bagpipe tuning a few minutes ago. I'm sure that's not what we'll be using in Berea, but it works out well. Kudos to daveh for taking on the task of making tabs for those tunes that he hasn't already made tabs for. I usually play Wayfaring Stranger in Aeolian CGBb, but I'll now try it in Dorian.
Good list. Only two have I never heard of -- Long, Long Ago and Holy Mana. Holy Mana seems simple enough once I found a YouTube vid of a single singer not a choir. Long, Long Ago is a bit more complicated with it's A and B parts, but still not bad... Guess I'd best get practicing.
Just now checking in on this. Dorian had my attention for the last week or so. I had entered "Wildwood Flower" with my list so I got one in! I only had nine outliers! It would be nice to see the other entries that weren't selected, but perhaps it would trigger an undercurrent of unrest. Thanks for all your work on this!
Holy Manna is the only song I don't already have in some form or another. I can figure it out, and this link goes to a video that displays the sheet music that I will use to make something suitable for a dulcimer. I have music editing software (Musedit) that allows me to input the melody notes of any version and then I can transpose the notes to something that fits a dulcimer. What a nice thought to have some blessed Holy Manna falling down on us today.
I'm leaning toward making everything in a DAx tuning (DAA, DAC, DAG, DAF, etc.). I'm thinking if we're playing these songs together and a need to retune occurs, we only have to retune the melody string(s) if we're already in a DAx tuning. Old Joe Clark is most common in DAD tuning but I can make an arrangement for EAA tuning that will work. It is Mixolydian and it only fits on our diatonic fretboard starting on the 4th fret and ending open (unless one is using half frets). I'll plan to create both and we'll see which one works the best for us.
Some songs will fit in multiple tunings (like Shady Grove, Wayfarin' Stranger, and Amazing Grace). I'll plan on making tablature for both versions if two versions are possible.
